IMPORTANT NOTIFICATION AUGUST 2025

Dear Valued CBAR client,

Advisory of 2G & 3G network looming shutdown

Falcon – GSM Alarm Communicator - Radio ...                              Olarm Pro - The Security Shop

According to ICASA, South Africa’s communications regulator, there will be a shutdown of all 2G & 3G networks with the aim of completing the process by the end of 2027.  This date is for the full shutdown of the network infrastructure, however, there have already been shutdowns in certain areas which began on 1st June 2025.

No new infrastructure for 2G & 3G could be activated by the networks since 31st December 2024.  This also means that if any 2G/3G networks go down in an area, they will not be repaired.

This transition is aimed at freeing up network spectrum for the more advanced technologies such as 4G & 5G.

How this may affect you;

There are many devices out there that still run on the 2G & 3G network.  These may include vehicle tracking devices, pay points, older mobile devices, communication links (such as older Olarms, FSK dual SIM radio transmitters and HYPE units).

These devices that link your alarm to our Central Monitoring Station will need to be replaced, in order to maintain connectivity when these networks are shut down.  There is a need for migration to 4G/5G compatible devices in order to mitigate potential disruption of your monitoring service.

CBAR has been in contact with the various suppliers in order to negotiate the best possible replacement price of these various units in order to financially inconvenience clients as little as possible.  A qualified service technician would need to attend your premises in order to exchange the 2G/3G unit with an upgraded 4G/5G unit.

Please, via return of email, contact colin@citybowlsecurity.co.za or call the CBAR technical department on 0860 151515 to discuss this upgrade if you have one of these older units, or are unsure if your communication device would need to be upgraded.

If you have the App on your phone, it will generally indicate 2G/3G/4G or 5G.  The newer units were manufactured from 2023 onwards, giving you an indication on whether you may have a newer device or not.

If you are receiving this email, your alarm system may be linked via an older 2G/3G device.

Kind Regards

The C.B.A.R. Team
